UKRAINE- In 2003 a Sister Ctiy relationship with Vinnitsa was formalized. Our ongoing medical, cultural and religous exchanges with this city has generated many volunteers and an already active membership. We  also signed a Friendship agreement with Krasnodon. Birmingham and Krasnodon have been

linked through the US-Ukraine Foundation Community Partnership Program for 8 years. Extensive professional exchanges are involved with this relationship. We have also received a grants to host Open World delegations from Ukraine and maintain regular people to people and informational exchanges with Vinnitsa.  We have hosted the last three Ukrainian Ambassadors to the USA and Scotty Colson is Honorary consul from Ukraine to Alabama. In 2017 Birmingham won the SCI Humanitarian award for the ongoing medical humanitarian shipments to Ukraine to bring relief to the Donbas.

In August of 2014, BSCC successfully hosted another Ukrainian Independence Day celebration. Approximately 200 people from the community attended this event.

Since October of 2014, Birmingham Sister Cities Commission has sent off three batches of medical supplies to our sister city in Vinnytsya in order to help with their war efforts. We have collected and sent off a total of approximately $10,000 worth of medical supplies. Also, during the first week of December, we hosted six Ukrainian delegates as a part of the U.S. Open World Leadership program. The delegates learned about the various entities in the City of Birmingham and networked with many of the city’s largest stakeholders.


In 2012 and 2013 Birmingham hosted groups sponsored by Open world.  These groups featured young professionals from Vinnytsia.  We will host another group in 2014

The annual August Ukraine Independence Day celebration gets better each year!

We had to suspend plans for a visit this spring to Vinnytsia and other parts of Ukraine due to the present civil disorder and State Department travel advisories.  We continue to monitor and support our dear friends in Ukraine in this time of disorder and uncertainty as they work to make their country more Western, Democratic and just.

-Sept. 8, 2012 we held the Ukraine Independence Day celebration that drew almost 200 people. Food, music and fellowship for local Ukrainian Americans and their friends continued a 5 year tradition.  

- Largest fountain in Europe switched on in Vinnytsia

-The 3rd Annual Ukraine Celebration was a big success.  Over 300 people attended festivities at Crestway Baptist Church on Aug. 27, 2011.


-April 15-23, 2011 we will host our fourth Open World delegation. This program is designed to bring leaders from former Soviet Republics to America for training experiences. Birmingham will be hosting an unprecedented 4th delegation and the delegation will consist of people from our Sister City of Vinnytsia. The theme for the visit will be "Transparency in Government."

-We are planning to host Ambassador Olexander Motsyk this year in Birmingham.

-We sent a received Christmas/Holiday Cards from students at Sun Valley elementary to students in Vinnytsia.

-We were honored to host the Ukrainian Ambassador Oleh Shamshur Jan. 19-21,2008. where he announced that Scotty Colson would be the new Honorary Consul for Ukraine to Alabama.   Alabama is only one of  5 states with an honorary consulate for Ukraine.  We are working with the BCRI to have an exhibition on the Holodomor (Ukrainian famine caused by Stalin's policies) next year and also working with Ukraine 300 to establish links between their children's health system and our Children's Hospital.
